At 2pm, I was checked again and had made it to 8cm dilated so didn’t need the hormone drip in the end! I really do think that the epidural helped my body to relax and dilate and was so grateful to my partner and the team of midwives for supporting my decision for this.
Although I didn’t get the unmediated water birth that I wanted, I was so happy with my birth and really would say that it was a positive experience. I would do it all again in a heartbeat for our darling girl Ivy.

So, what part did the hypnobirthing course play in all of this? The answer is – I believe a very large part! Even though my labour and birth were a completely different experience to the one we were hoping for, I still felt in control, and know that the choices we and our care givers made under the circumstances were the best ones for us and our son. Although the direction my labour and birth took was what I feared most, I still somehow felt quite relaxed, and despite all the chaos, I was able to go with the flow and enjoy the experience in a different way, and far more calmly than I would ever imagined I would.

Although I didn’t get my ideal birth, I still had a positive birth experience and I genuinely believe that is down to hypnobirthing.
I was able to get to fully dilated just using the techniques I had learnt, which were so effective I felt I must have only been a few cm’s when I was almost ready to push!

At 12:30 we called the hospital as my surges were increasing in intensity and becoming more frequent. I spoke to the midwife who said to call back in an hour as this was our first baby and I still sounded so chilled! 30 minutes later we called back to say we were on our way in. By the time we got to the hospital, I had an overwhelming urge to push and asked for some gas and air to breath through my surges.
