"She was so informative and has really helped us to feel prepared for the birth of our second baby" - S & S
I am Rachel Quickenden DipHB(KGH), a qualified hypnobirthing practitioner, from Tonbridge, Kent. KGHypnobirthing is an antenatal course accredited by the Royal College of Midwives. My other most important qualification is that I am a mum of two.
Before I found hypnobirthing, I qualified as a lawyer. The polar opposite of hypnobirthing? Possibly! But actually my clients needed me to provide them with clear information and then support them with their own individual journey - all of which I do now as a hypnobirthing practitioner.
I came across hypnobirthing when I was pregnant with my first son. Given my lawyerly background, it sounded a bit 'out there' for me and I was sceptical, but intrigued. Could it really be as effective as people said? I read the KGHypnobirthing book and listened to some MP3s. I also attended some of the more classic antenatal courses that most people go to. And all of this helped me to feel positive and informed - I genuinely looked forward to giving birth and do not recall feeling fearful at any point.
But was my birth entirely positive? Not quite. It was relatively straightforward and I felt calm despite various bumps in the road but when it came down to it, I didn't quite have the confidence to stick to my guns. A particularly bullish midwife somehow managed to override a lot of my wishes.
The benefit of hindsight is a wonderful thing. Hypnobirthing is not something you can just buy - it is something you learn and practice, throughout your pregnancy. Dabbling in it simply won't have the same effect. Having since trained as a hypnobirthing teacher, with the birth of my second son I was able to really put the theory into practice and I had the most amazing, empowering birth.
Through having my own children, I've learned how fundamental a mother's birth story is to her. Giving birth is not just a day - the memory of that experience lives within a woman for the rest of her life, and can be particularly powerful in the weeks and months after giving birth. So - of all the many things that need to be planned or purchased in the run up to having a baby - preparing for that birth is the most important investment that parents-to-be can make.
I've also learned that too many women do not realise the impact that they can have on their birth experience. That they can feel calm and confident, that it doesn't have to be scary and traumatic, and that through gaining a good antenatal education they can even have an impact upon the way in which their birth unfolds. It breaks my heart that smart, educated women surrender control when it comes to the birth of their baby, not realising that things can be so different.
Book a Strong Like Mama course and I will teach you about how your body is going to work intuitively, how to navigate the maternity system in the best way for you, and how you can relax and give birth to your baby unimpeded by fear.
